In Tafsir as Mystical Experience, Todd Lawson shows how the Quran may be engaged with for meaning and understanding, the usual goal of mystical exegesis, and also how it may be engaged with through tafsīr in a quest for spiritual or mystical experience. In this earliest of the Báb’s extended works, written before his public claim to be the return of the hidden Imam, the act of reading is shown to be something akin to holy communion in which the sacred text is both entrance upon and destination of the mystic quest. The Quran here is a door to an “abode of glory” and an abiding spiritual encounter with the divine through the prophet, his daughter Fāṭima and the twelve Imams of Ithna-ʿasharī Shiʿism who inhabit the letters, words, verses and suras of the Book. Todd Lawson explores how the timeless literary genres of epic and apocalypse bear religious meaning in the Quran, communicating the sense of divine presence, urgency and truth. Grounding his approach in the universal power of story and myth, he embarks upon a fascinating inquiry into the unique power of one of the most loved, widely read and recited books in the world.

English Translation of the Holy Quran, with Arabic Text, and Made-Easy Transliteration: Volume 2 (Part 18 - Part 30)

Volume 2: This book provides, in two volumes, an English translation of the Holy Quran, accompanied by the original Arabic text of the Quran with a transliteration of the Arabic text into English language characters. The transliteration will enable those who cannot read the Arabic text to recite it by following its representation in the English alphabet. To help the ordinary reader, the transliteration shows the sounds of the Arabic letters and words through English letters, without employing any diacritical marks used in formal, academic transliteration. The hyphen is used to separate syllables. Underlining is used under two successive letters to represent doubled letters (as in inna) or when the two letters stand for a single letter of the Arabic alphabet (as in kh or sh). The transliteration and the Arabic text are laid out side-by-side in two columns, with each verse beginning on a new line. The English translation is provided after each "section" in case of the long chapters (i.e., chapters up to ch. 80) and after the entire chapter in case of short chapters (i.e., chapters 80 to the end).

The Miraculous Language of the Qur'an: Evidence of Divine Origin

This study illustrates why the language of the Qur'an is miraculous, unique, and evidence of divine authority. The author compares the language of the Qur'an with the language of pre-Islamic poetry, the Prophet's words (hadith), and the language of the Arabs both past and present, to demonstrate that although the Qur'an was revealed in Arabic it was at the same time an Arabic which was entirely new. Original and early Muslim audiences viewed this as miraculous and responded to the Qur'an's words, sounds, rhythms, etc. in a manner consistent with a deeper appreciation of its beauty and majesty which modern ears, trained by familiarity, and despite being surrounded by all manner of dictionarie...

Di‘bil b. ‘Ali

Di'bil b. 'Alī (765--860) was regarded by his contemporaries as one of the best satirists in the school of Arabic poets which flourished during the early 'Abbāsid age. Leon Zolondek has collected, translated, and annotated 229 fragments of Di'bil's verse and has assembled materials for a reconstruction of his long-lost yet widely quoted Book of the Poets. Arabic texts of the poems and of the citations of Book of the Poets are included.

The Sublime Quran

This is the first translation of the Quran by an American woman. It is a universal and inclusive translation with the hope that Islam will be better understood in the West. She also challenges the use of the wowrd "to beat" in 4: 34 as meaning "to go away" which is how the Prophet of Islam understood the word as it has historically justified violence against and abuse of Muslim women. "This interpretation must change," she says, "and revert to the way the Prophet understood it."

A Vessel of Honour

A Vessel of Honour is a heart-to-heart exposure from the Scriptures of spiritual shallowness and dryness and their catastrophic consequences in the life and ministry of a child of God. There are some trees whose roots grow or are on the surface instead of burrowing down. Such roots are shallow—they lack depth. It is understandable if a young convert is shallow but if after many years a Christian has no deep spiritual roots, then there is a problem. In what are you deep? Are you Deep in forgiving people and forgetting wrongdoing? Deep in seeking, finding, and knowing God? Deep in loving and being content in God? Deep in bearing fruits, in leading people to the Lord? Deep in building the peo...
